Eastern Sierra Photo Adventure
California's Eastern Sierra offers an extraordinary diversity of landscapes, from the rugged high desert and towering granite mountains to alpine lakes, colorful autumn forests, and distinctive geological formations. Over six days, fellow photographer John Hallam and I explored these changing landscapes, dedicating our time to discovering compositions, working with natural light, and capturing the character of each location.
Our journey began near Lone Pine, where the weathered granite formations of Alabama Hills provided dramatic foregrounds against the towering Sierra Nevada peaks. Early morning sunlight transformed the mountains into brilliant shades of orange and gold, creating memorable compositions through Mobius Arch and across the surrounding high-desert landscape.
Traveling north, the autumn colors of Bishop Creek Canyon introduced a different photographic experience. Brilliant golden aspens contrasted with rugged mountain terrain, while a rustic wooden footbridge offered a more intimate perspective of the changing season.
Around Mammoth Lakes, the first morning light illuminated the peaks above Convict Lake, creating striking reflections across the calm water. Elsewhere in the lake basin, weathered tree stumps rising from the shallow water provided an opportunity to concentrate on shapes, textures, and smaller details within the landscape.
Continuing into the June Lake Loop, Gull Lake reflected golden sunlight on the surrounding granite mountains, while the aspen groves near Silver Lake offered a different perspective on autumn, with slender white trunks reaching toward a canopy of green and yellow foliage.
At Mono Lake, the distinctive limestone tufa formations created compelling compositions throughout the day. Warm morning light emphasized their unusual textures and shapes, while a spectacular sunset transformed the lake into a landscape of brilliant colors and reflections.
Our adventure concluded in Yosemite National Park, where towering granite formations, forests, and expansive valley views offered opportunities for both color and black-and-white photography. From the distinctive peaks of the Three Brothers to the iconic view of Yosemite Valley from Tunnel View, the landscape provided a memorable conclusion to six days of exploration.
This collection reflects my approach to photography adventures: planning carefully while remaining open to unexpected discoveries, exploring a variety of landscapes, and recognizing that compelling photographs are often found beyond the locations originally anticipated.
Each photograph represents a moment of observation, composition, and changing light—a visual record of the landscapes and experiences that made this Eastern Sierra Photo Adventure memorable.
